Physiotherapy after acute Covid19 infection and in case of Long Covid
If you've recovered from COVID-19 after a coronavirus infection, but you continue to suffer from persistent breathing difficulties and a lack of resilience, fatigue and exhaustion, muscle and limb pain, or even neurological symptoms, then targeted physiotherapy or individualized strength and endurance training could be a good option for you.
Not much is known about long COVID yet. A new study by the Mainz University Medical Center shows that around 40 percent of people struggle with long-term health problems after a coronavirus infection. Almost 30 percent complained that they were unable to regain their original level of functioning after the illness. Women were slightly more likely to experience long-term effects than men, and age played hardly any role. There is currently insufficient research into how long COVID develops. However, there are several factors that can increase the risk of long COVID. These include a severe course of COVID-19, advanced age, severe obesity, and certain pre-existing lung and heart conditions.
A COVID-19 infection can have a wide range of consequences (see Figure 1). These range from reduced performance, difficulty concentrating, and breathing difficulties to poor and protective posture (especially of the chest), as well as neurological symptoms such as headaches. If you have been immobile for a certain period of time, you can also expect consequences for the musculoskeletal system. These primarily affect the musculoskeletal system.

A further consequence is reduced performance in strength and strength endurance. Spiroergometry is recommended to determine the patient's current pulmonary performance. Based on this, targeted endurance training can then be conducted.
It is also known that patients benefit from strength training of the major muscle groups.
What can physiotherapy contribute to this?
For these long-term consequences, known as long COVID or post-COVID syndrome, tailored physiotherapy can help alleviate symptoms and improve your performance and quality of life. Physiotherapy supports your recovery, and manual therapy improves spinal mobility and corrects poor posture. This not only promotes patient mobility but also improves lung ventilation. It is also important to relieve the strain on the accessory respiratory muscles. Physiotherapy teaches exercises that promote activity and manifest regained mobility.
