Physiotherapy after acute Covid19 infection and for Long Covid

You have suffered from Covid-19 after a corona infection. But you continue to suffer from persistent breathing difficulties and a lack of resilience, from tiredness and exhaustion, from muscle and limb pain or even neurological symptoms. Then targeted physiotherapy or individual strength and endurance training could be good support for you.

Not much is known about Long Covid yet. A new study by Mainz University Medicine shows that around 40 percent struggle with health problems for a long time after a corona infection. Almost 30 percent complained that they had not regained their original performance level after the illness. Women were slightly more likely to be affected by long-term effects than men; age hardly played a role. There is currently not enough research into how Long COVID occurs. However, there are some factors that can increase the risk of Long COVID. These include: severe COVID-19 illness, older age, being very overweight (obesity) and certain previous illnesses of the lungs and heart.

A Covid-19 infection can have many different consequences (see Fig. 1). They range from reduced performance, difficulty concentrating, difficulty breathing, incorrect and protective posture (especially of the chest) to neurological symptoms such as headaches. If you have been immobile for a certain period of time, consequences for your musculoskeletal system can also be expected. These primarily affect the holding and supporting apparatus.

Another consequence is reduced performance in terms of strength and endurance. Spiroergometry is recommended to determine the patient's current pulmonary performance. On this basis, targeted endurance training can then be carried out.

It is also known that patients benefit from strength training of the main muscle groups.

What can physiotherapy contribute to this?

For these long-term effects, known as Long Covid or Post Covid syndrome, physiotherapy tailored to your needs can help relieve symptoms and improve your performance and quality of life. Physiotherapy supports you in your regeneration and manual therapy improves mobility in the spine and corrects poor posture. This not only promotes the patient's mobility, but also improves ventilation of the lungs. It is also important to relieve the strain on the respiratory muscles. Physiotherapy is used to teach exercises that promote activity and manifest regained mobility.
